Wall systems are the hardest category in the garage to compare, and it is not the buyer's fault. Every manufacturer publishes a capacity in a different unit: per linear foot, per square foot, per panel, and per hook. Those are four incomparable numbers describing four incomparable things.
What follows converts them into the one question that actually decides your purchase: can this wall hold what I am about to hang on it? Our criteria are on how we pick — we read the manufacturers' installation manuals and published specifications, and we have not tested any of these systems.
Read this first
All four ratings assume the system is fixed into studs. Wall Control publishes the difference explicitly: 200 lb per panel into studs against 100 lb into drywall anchors — half the capacity for the same panel. Everything below is conditional on finding your studs first, and that is worked through on how much weight a garage wall holds.

Translating the units
Here is the arithmetic that makes those four numbers comparable. Take a notional 4 ft wide by 4 ft tall section of wall — 16 square feet, 4 linear feet across:

Two conclusions fall out of that, and they are the whole article:
- Per-square-foot numbers look enormous and are not. 1,200 lb across a Proslat panel is a distributed figure. It does not mean you can hang a 300 lb point load off one hook. Distributed and point loads are different engineering cases, and it is the same distinction that governs an overhead rack.
- Pegboard's real limit is the hook, not the panel. Wall Control publishes 200 lb per panel, but also 10 to 15 lb per hook engaging two slots and 5 to 10 lb per hook engaging one. In practice you hit the hook limit long before the panel limit — which is why pegboard is a hand-tool wall and not a bike wall.
How we ranked these
Five criteria: published capacity, coverage per dollar, accessory range, install simplicity, and documentation. That last one carries real weight here — Gladiator publishes its figures in the installation manual and Wall Control publishes per-hook limits nobody else in pegboard does. A brand that will not tell you what its wall holds is asking you to guess.
Track or full panel: the actual decision
This is the fork in the road and it comes down to what you are hanging.
Track wins when the items are heavy and few
GearTrack's 75 lb per linear foot is the highest rate published here, and track only covers the strip of wall you need rather than the whole thing. Two runs at 4 ft and 6 ft off the floor handle bikes, a ladder, a wheelbarrow and a leaf blower for a fraction of what paneling the wall costs.
Panel wins when the items are many and variable
Panels let you hang anything at any height rather than only on a line. That freedom is worth paying for when the wall's contents change often, or when you genuinely do not know yet what is going on it. It is not worth paying for when you already know it is six things.
The material question nobody asks until it is too late
An unheated garage goes through humidity swings that MDF slatwall does not survive gracefully — it swells at the edges and the slat profile stops holding accessories properly.
Proslat's answer is PVC, rated to 75 lb per square foot with a lifetime warranty, and in a damp garage the material is the entire argument. Steel is the other durable answer, which is what Wall Control is — 20-gauge galvanized rather than hardboard. Anything wood-based on an exterior garage wall is a decision to revisit in five years.
The constraint that eliminates products
Proslat publishes installation to 16 in studs. If your garage is framed at 24 in on center — which plenty are, particularly in detached and newer builds — that is a fit question to resolve before ordering, not after.
It is the same class of check as joist spacing for an overhead rack, it takes five minutes with a stud finder, and it is the single most common reason a wall system arrives and cannot go up as planned.
Who should skip wall systems
- Anyone whose walls are masonry or block. Every rating above assumes timber studs. Masonry is a different fixing problem with different hardware, and the published numbers do not transfer.
- Anyone storing bins. Totes want a shelf or an overhead rack. Hanging them on a wall is a lot of hardware for a poor result.
- Renters. All four systems fix into studs, which means substantial holes.

What works
- 75 lb per linear foot is the highest published figure of the mainstream wall systems here
- Track means you only cover the strip of wall you need, not the whole thing
- Accessory range is broad and stays available
- The capacity figure is published in the installation instructions, which is where a figure you are going to rely on belongs
What doesn't
- Only holds things at the height of the track, so you are installing two or three runs to get real coverage
- The per-linear-foot rating assumes the track is fastened into studs, which caps you at where the studs are
- Accessories are proprietary
Skip this one if the wall is going to hold a lot of small light things — hand tools, spray cans, cordless batteries. That is pegboard's job, and pegboard does it for a fraction of the price.

What works
- Steel rather than hardboard, so the holes do not blow out and the board does not bow
- Publishes limits per panel, per hook AND per shelf — nobody else in pegboard does this
- Takes both round-hole and slotted accessories, so most existing pegboard hooks still work
- Cheapest way to get a lot of small tools off a bench and onto a wall
What doesn't
- Per-hook limits are genuinely low; this is a hand-tool wall, not a ladder-and-bike wall
- 100 lb per panel into drywall anchors is much less than 200 lb into studs, and most people install into drywall
- Panels are small, so a full wall is a lot of panels and a lot of alignment
Skip this one if what you need on the wall is bikes, ladders, or a wheelbarrow. A 10 to 15 lb hook limit is not a suggestion, and the right answer for those is track or heavy-duty hooks into studs.

Skip this one if your studs are 24 in on center. The published mounting is 16 in, and stretching a panel system across wider studs is exactly the shortcut that ends with a panel pulling off the wall.

Skip this one if you know exactly what is going on that wall and it is six things. Two runs of track will hold them for a fraction of the cost, and the wall stays a wall.
Questions people actually ask
How much weight can a garage wall storage system hold?
It depends on the system and the unit it publishes in. Gladiator GearTrack is rated at 75 lb per linear foot and GearWall at 50 lb per square foot. Proslat classic slatwall is rated to 75 lb per square foot. Wall Control publishes 200 lb per panel into studs and 100 lb into drywall anchors. All of those assume correct installation into studs.
Which garage wall system is strongest?
Per linear foot, Gladiator GearTrack at 75 lb is the highest published rate here. Per square foot, Proslat classic slatwall is also 75 lb against GearWall's 50. They are not directly comparable because they describe different things — the translation table above puts them on the same footing.
Can I install slatwall on 24 inch studs?
Proslat publishes installation to 16 in studs. If your garage is framed at 24 in on center, resolve that with the manufacturer before ordering. Stretching a panel system across wider studs than it was designed for is the shortcut that ends with a panel coming off the wall.
Is pegboard strong enough for a garage?
For hand tools, yes — Wall Control publishes 200 lb per panel into studs. But the binding limit is the hook, not the panel: 10 to 15 lb per hook engaging two slots and 5 to 10 lb for one. That makes it a hand-tool wall rather than a bike or ladder wall.
Do I need to hit studs?
Yes, and the difference is published. Wall Control rates the same panel at 200 lb into studs and 100 lb into drywall anchors — half the capacity for the identical panel. Drywall alone is not a fixing for a load-bearing wall system.
