Proslat or Gladiator GearWall: the panel systems compared
Two slatted panel systems that publish capacity in the same unit, which almost never happens. 75 pounds per square foot against 50, and what else separates them.

This is a rare comparison in garage storage: both manufacturers publish capacity in the same unit. Proslat states 75 lb per square foot for its classic PVC slatwall. Gladiator states 50 lb per square foot for GearWall. No conversion, no assumptions — a straight 50 percent advantage to Proslat on the published number.
It is not the only thing that matters, and for some garages it is not even the deciding thing. But it is unusual to be able to say it plainly, so we are saying it plainly. Both systems sit in the garage wall hub, and the criteria behind the scoring are on how we pick.

What per square foot actually means
Both figures are distributed loads across the panel area, not a per-hook number. Take a 4 ft wide by 8 ft tall run — 32 square feet.

Those totals are not a license to hang 2,400 lb on a garage wall. They are a way of seeing that both panels are specified well past what a wall of hand tools, hoses and folding chairs will ever weigh — and that the actual constraint is the structure behind, covered in how much weight a garage wall can hold.
Where the difference bites is concentrated load in a small area: a heavy basket of hardware, a loaded shelf bracket, a mounted vice. Over a small patch of panel, 75 against 50 is a real 50 percent margin.
Damp, and why PVC keeps coming up
Proslat's classic line is PVC. In an unheated garage that goes through a real winter, that is a material advantage rather than a marketing line — PVC does not swell, rot, or delaminate, and it does not need sealing. If your garage is attached, heated, and dry, this advantage disappears and you should weight the other factors more heavily.
The ecosystem question
Gladiator's case is not really the panel — it is that GearWall, GearTrack, Gladiator cabinets, the workbench and the shelving all match visually and dimensionally. If the plan is a whole wall that looks like one designed thing, Gladiator is the only range in this comparison that does that, and the fuller assessment is in our Gladiator review.
Proslat's case is the opposite: buy the panel on its published number and its material, and treat the accessories as accessories.
GearTrack is a different question, not a lesser one
GearTrack publishes 75 lb per linear foot, which is not comparable to a per-square-foot figure and should not be treated as one. Track is horizontal bands rather than full coverage: less wall area covered, more load per foot of the band, and much less material for the same run. For bikes, ladders and heavy hooks, track fixed into studs is frequently the better answer than any panel — that trade is worked through in pegboard against slatwall against track.
Installation: what each one asks of you
Both are panel systems fastened into studs, and both live or die on the same preparation. The differences are in the detail.
Proslat specifies mounting into 16 inch studs. That is a clean requirement when your studs are on 16 inch centers and a complication when they are not — older garages and converted spaces are frequently on 24 inch centers or something less regular. Find and mark every stud across the full run before the first panel goes up.
Gladiator's instructions cover fixing through drywall into the stud behind, which is the common real-world case and useful to have documented rather than improvised. That documentation is part of why Gladiator scores well on published information across this site even where its capacity figure is the lower one.
For both: panels are long, walls are rarely square, and the last panel in a run almost always needs cutting. Plan the run so the cut panel lands in the least visible corner, and check level on the first panel obsessively — every panel after it inherits the error.
How each wall grows
Almost nobody covers a whole garage wall in one purchase, so how the system extends matters more than the first panel does.
- Panels grow horizontally and vertically. Both of these are full-coverage systems, so extending means buying more area, and the price scales with the square footage rather than with what you hang.
- Track grows in bands. GearTrack adds another channel at another height, which is far cheaper per foot of wall treated. If the budget is going to arrive in stages, this is the shape that suits it.
- Accessories do not cross brands. A Proslat hook is not a Gladiator hook. Whichever you start with is the one you are extending, so the first purchase is the decision.
Honest cons on both
Proslat
- Mounting is specified into 16 in studs, so a wall on non-standard centers is more work.
- The 200 lb figure belongs to the heavy-duty aluminum-core line, not the classic PVC. Do not plan a classic-panel wall against it.
- It is a panel system with a panel system's cost per square foot, and covering a full garage wall is a real spend.
Gladiator GearWall
- 50 lb per square foot is the lower published number here, and it is published, so we are counting it.
- No lifetime warranty term published against Proslat's.
- Accessories are Gladiator-profile. Coming into the system means committing to it.
The verdict
Buy Proslat if the number matters to you, the garage is damp or unheated, or you want the lifetime warranty. On published capacity and material tolerance it is the stronger panel of the two.
Buy Gladiator GearWall if the wall is becoming a matched system with Gladiator cabinets, track and a workbench. 50 lb per square foot is still far more than a tool wall asks for, and system coherence is a real benefit that a spec sheet does not show.
Buy GearTrack instead of either if what you are hanging is heavy and awkward — bikes, ladders, a wheelbarrow. Bands of track into studs put the load where the structure is, and cost less than covering the whole wall.

Skip this one if your studs are 24 in on center. The published mounting is 16 in, and stretching a panel system across wider studs is exactly the shortcut that ends with a panel pulling off the wall.

What works

What doesn't
- Only holds things at the height of the track, so you are installing two or three runs to get real coverage
- The per-linear-foot rating assumes the track is fastened into studs, which caps you at where the studs are

Skip this one if the wall is going to hold a lot of small light things — hand tools, spray cans, cordless batteries. That is pegboard's job, and pegboard does it for a fraction of the price.

Is Proslat stronger than Gladiator GearWall?
On the published figures, yes: Proslat states 75 lb per square foot for its classic PVC slatwall against Gladiator's 50 lb per square foot for GearWall. Both are stated in the same unit, so the comparison is direct. Proslat also publishes a heavy-duty aluminum-core line rated to 200 lb.
Is PVC slatwall better than panel slatwall in a garage?
In a damp or unheated garage, PVC has a genuine material advantage — it does not swell, rot or need sealing. In a dry, heated, attached garage the advantage largely disappears and you should choose on capacity, accessory range and how the wall is going to grow.
Can I compare GearTrack's rating to slatwall?
Not directly. GearTrack publishes 75 lb per linear foot and the panel systems publish per square foot — different units measuring different things. Track concentrates load along a band; panels spread it over an area.
Do slatwall panels need to go into studs?
Yes. Proslat specifies 16 in stud mounting and Gladiator's instructions cover fixing through drywall into the stud behind. A panel fastened only to drywall does not carry its published rating, whatever the panel is made of.
