Garage hooks: what the weight ratings actually mean

A hook rated 10 lb will not hold a bike, and most pegboard hooks are rated closer to 10 than to 50. The number that matters is per hook, and almost nobody checks it.

Here is the mistake this page exists to prevent. Somebody buys a pegboard, hangs a bike on a hook, and the hook — or the board — lets go. The pegboard was not faulty. Wall Control publishes 10 to 15 lb for a hook engaging two slots and 5 to 10 lb for a hook engaging one. A bike is 25 to 35 lb. The arithmetic never worked.

Hook ratings are published per hook, they are far lower than people assume, and they are almost never the number on the packaging you looked at. There are three numbers, not one

Every hung load passes through three separate limits, and your real capacity is the smallest of them. Most buyers only ever look at one.

Manufacturer published figures. The binding constraint is whichever is lowest for your specific setup — usually the hook.

The hook is almost always the smallest number. That is the insight: people upgrade the board when the hook was the problem, or blame the wall when the hook was rated for a fraction of what they hung on it.

The dividing line lands in a consistent place: hooks on a panel are for things under about 15 lb. Everything heavier wants track fixed directly into studs, or a purpose-built rack.

For light things: metal pegboard

Wall Control metal pegboard is the pick for a hand-tool wall, and the reason is disclosure rather than strength. It publishes limits per panel, per hook and per shelf assembly — 200 lb per panel into studs, 100 lb into drywall anchors, 10 to 15 lb per two-slot hook, 5 to 10 lb per one-slot hook, 10 to 20 lb per shelf assembly.

Nobody else in pegboard publishes that much. It is 20-gauge galvanized steel rather than hardboard, so the holes do not blow out and the board does not bow.

Honest cons. The per-hook figures are genuinely low — this is a hand-tool wall and nothing more. 100 lb per panel into drywall anchors is half the stud figure, and most people install into drywall. Panels are small, so a full wall is a lot of panels and a lot of alignment.

For heavy things: track into studs

Gladiator GearTrack publishes 75 lb per linear foot, mounted into wood studs through drywall. That is a fundamentally different order of capacity from a pegboard hook, because the load goes into a steel channel that is itself screwed into structure.

This is the system for bikes, ladders, wheelbarrows and anything else that made the "No" column in the table above. It also grows in bands rather than by area, so treating a wall in stages costs less than paneling it.

Honest cons. The 75 lb per linear foot is the track's rating — each accessory has its own lower limit, so the channel is rarely what gives. Coverage per dollar is worse than a plain panel. And you are committing to Gladiator's accessory profile.

For a whole wall: slatwall panels

If the plan is to cover the wall rather than band it, the two panel systems publish in the same unit, which almost never happens: Proslat PVC at 75 lb per square foot against Gladiator GearWall at 50 lb per square foot. Proslat also publishes a heavy-duty aluminum-core line rated to 200 lb.

Honest cons on both. Cost per square foot of wall covered is the real objection to any panel system, and both are specified into studs, so finding and marking every stud across the run is unavoidable.

Into studs, or the published numbers do not apply

Wall Control publishes 200 lb per panel into studs and 100 lb into drywall anchors — half. Every figure on this page assumes the fixing is right. A hook rated 15 lb screwed into bare drywall is not a 15 lb hook, it is a hole waiting to happen. What your wall itself can carry is in how much weight a garage wall can hold.

Ceiling hooks are a different question

Everything above is about walls. Screw-in ceiling hooks — the kind sold for hanging bikes and ladders from joists — behave differently and deserve their own warning.

  • The load hangs directly over you and your car. A wall hook that fails drops something against the wall. A ceiling hook that fails drops it onto whatever is parked underneath.
  • It must go into a joist, not into the ceiling board. Drywall, plasterboard and thin plywood will not hold a screw hook under load, and a hook that feels tight going in can still pull out under a swinging load.
  • The ceiling has its own capacity limit. Joists are framed for a design load, and a few hooks concentrating weight between joists is exactly the case that design does not cover. The arithmetic is in how much weight a garage ceiling can hold.

The honest rule: if it is heavy enough that you would not want it landing on your car, it does not belong on a single screw-in ceiling hook. Put it on a rated overhead rack instead — the options are in the overhead rack ranking.

Buying hooks without getting burned

  1. Weigh the heaviest thing first. Bathroom scales work: weigh yourself, then yourself holding the bike. That number decides everything else.
  2. Demand a published per-hook figure. A hook sold with no stated rating is a hook you cannot plan with. There are plenty that publish one; buy those.
  3. Match the hook to the system, not just to the wall. Slatwall hooks, GearTrack hooks and pegboard hooks are not interchangeable, and the profile you start with is the one you keep buying.
  4. Spread big loads over two fixings. A long item on one hook is a point load and a pivot; two hooks turn it into a beam.
  5. Do not hang anything overhead you would not want to drop. Ceiling hooks put the load directly above you and your car.

What to buy

Buy Wall Control metal pegboard if the wall is hand tools, cords and hoses. It is the cheapest way to get a lot of small things off a bench, and it is the most honest product in the category about what it holds.

Buy Gladiator GearTrack if anything on your list weighs more than about 15 lb. 75 lb per linear foot into studs is the right order of capacity for bikes, ladders and garden equipment.

Buy Proslat if you want to cover the whole wall and the garage is damp or unheated. 75 lb per square foot, PVC, lifetime warranty.

Buy Gladiator GearWall if the wall is becoming a matched system with Gladiator cabinets and bench, and you accept 50 lb per square foot as the lower published figure of the two panels.

Questions people actually ask

How much weight can a garage hook hold?

Far less than most people assume, and it depends on the hook rather than the wall. Wall Control publishes 10 to 15 lb for a hook engaging two pegboard slots and 5 to 10 lb for one slot. That is a hand-tool rating — a bike at 25 to 35 lb is well past it.

Can I hang a bike on pegboard hooks?

Not on published figures. A road or hybrid bike is roughly 20 to 30 lb against a 10 to 15 lb two-slot hook rating. Bikes want track fixed into studs — Gladiator GearTrack publishes 75 lb per linear foot — or a bike-specific rack with a published per-bike capacity.

What are the strongest garage wall hooks?
