Garage storage questions, answered

Less than most people assume, and the rack's rating is not the answer. A garage framed for an uninhabitable attic without storage is designed for a 10 lb per square foot live load; with limited storage, 20 psf. Only if your ceiling can carry 600 lb, which is a separate question. The rack's rating and the ceiling's capacity are two different numbers and the lower one governs. Almost nobody in this category says that out loud.

Not anywhere you walk. The best case — a 12 in drop with a 15.27 in tote on a 96 in ceiling — leaves about 68.7 inches, which is below head height for most adults. The answer is placement, not product: over the car or along the back perimeter, where nobody walks.

FlexiMounts publishes fit for any spacing up to 24 in, or exactly 48 in if wider. SafeRacks uses 27 in brackets designed to span two joists. The genuinely awkward spacings are the in-between ones — 32 or 36 in — where a bracket sized for two joists cannot reach. Measure between two marked joists in two places before ordering.

24 inches if you store standard totes. The common 27-gallon totes are about 19.6 in wide, so an 18 in shelf leaves every one of them overhanging by an inch and a half. Go to 18 in only when a car door makes the extra six inches impossible — the measuring order is on how to plan garage shelving.

It varies enormously. The Husky welded 4-tier publishes 2,500 lb per shelf evenly distributed and 10,000 lb total; Seville Classics UltraDurable wire shelving publishes 800 lb per shelf on leveling feet. Some brands publish no per-shelf figure at all, which is worth noticing.

Wire in a damp or unheated garage — air moves through it, so things dry rather than sitting in a puddle, and you can see into the back of the shelf. Solid for loose small parts, which fall through wire, and for anything with a soft painted finish, which the wires mark.

The wall is almost never the limit — the fixing is. Wall Control publishes the same panel at 200 lb into studs and 100 lb into drywall anchors. Gladiator GearTrack is rated at 75 lb per linear foot, GearWall at 50 lb per square foot, and Proslat classic slatwall at 75 lb per square foot. All assume studs.

Wall Control publishes 10 to 15 lb for a hook engaging two slots and 5 to 10 lb for one, with the weight at the base of the hook rather than the tip. That is the binding limit on a pegboard wall — anything over about 15 lb wants track.

No. A hanging bike is a point load acting away from the wall, which multiplies the leverage on the fixing. Every wall system rating assumes fixing into studs, and drywall anchors halve the published capacity even where they are sanctioned.

The HDX Tough Tote is 28.55 x 19.61 x 15.27 in; the Sterilite Industrial is 28.5 x 19.63 x 15.5 in. The Sterilite Stacker is also 27 gallons but 25.75 x 18.38 x 19.38 in — a completely different shape that will not clear most overhead racks.

No, and it matters more in a cabinet than on a shelf. A standard tote is about 19.6 in wide, so the doors will not close — and a cabinet whose doors do not shut is an expensive open shelf. Cabinets holding bins need to be 24 in deep.

Usually not. The published safe load on a lifting rack is roughly half a fixed rack of the same size, for considerably more money. It earns its cost when a single item is too heavy or awkward to carry up a ladder safely — a kayak is the clearest case. Full argument on fixed rack vs motorized lift.

On the wall, hanging by a wheel from track-mounted hooks into studs, alternating nose-up and nose-down so the handlebars interleave. Not the ceiling — hoists are the most abandoned hardware in the garage, because every ride means a rope, a cleat and often a ladder.

We would not. Tires are dense weight concentrated in a small footprint, which is the wrong load for a ceiling framed around a distributed figure. They belong on heavy-duty shelving near an upright, where the slab carries them.

Store it flat and fully supported, or genuinely vertical — square to the floor rather than leaning. A sheet leaning at an angle is supported along one edge only and will take on a curve you cannot remove. Keep it off the slab on battens.
