Affiliate disclosure
Rail & Rafter earns a commission when you buy through links on this site. Here is exactly how that works and what it does not influence.
The short version
Rail & Rafter earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through links on this site, at no additional cost to you. That commission is the only way this site is funded.
It does not decide what we recommend, what ranks first, or what we say about a product.
How the links work
When a page recommends a product, the buy button takes you to a retailer with a tracking identifier attached. If you buy something, the retailer pays us a small percentage of the sale. You pay the same price you would pay going there directly — the commission comes out of the retailer's margin, not out of your pocket.
As an Amazon Associate, Rail & Rafter earns from qualifying purchases.
Every one of those links is marked rel="sponsored nofollow" in the page's markup, which is the signal search engines ask for on monetized links. Links we cite as evidence — a manufacturer's spec sheet, an installation manual, a code table — are never affiliate-tagged. A citation is not a money link, and mixing the two would corrupt the sourcing this site runs on.
What commission does not influence
- Rankings. Where a cheaper product is the better buy, it goes first. Several products on this site rank ahead of more expensive alternatives for exactly that reason.
- What we say about a product. Every pick on this site carries an explicit reason you might want to skip it. A site optimizing purely for commission does not publish those.
- Whether we recommend buying at all. Several pages here argue that you should not buy the thing you came looking for — that a motorized lift is usually the wrong purchase, that most garages need one cabinet rather than a wall of them, and that the biggest improvement available to a small garage costs nothing.
What we do not accept
Three numbers, and they are all currently zero:
- Sponsored placements: 0. Nobody has paid to appear on this site, and nobody can.
- Paid rankings: 0. No position on any list is for sale.
- Free products accepted: 0. Nothing on this site was supplied to us by a manufacturer.
We will keep publishing those for as long as they stay true. If any of them ever changes, this page changes with it, prominently, before anything else does.
Prices
No price is typed into an article on this site. Prices render from a live retailer data layer and carry the date they were checked. Where no live price is available, the button says "Check price" and shows no figure.
This is a compliance requirement as much as an accuracy one — displaying a hand-copied price as if it were current is not permitted under the Amazon Associates operating agreement, and it would be wrong within a week regardless. The mechanism is described on how we pick.
Disclosure on the page itself
A linked disclosure page is not sufficient on its own. Every page on this site that carries a monetized link also carries a disclosure above the first one, where you will see it before you click rather than after.
One more thing worth being clear about
We do not test products. That is stated in full on how we pick, and it is relevant here because it is the claim an affiliate site has the most incentive to fake. Our recommendations come from published manufacturer specifications, published code tables and arithmetic we show the working for — not from hands-on evaluation, and we do not imply otherwise anywhere on this site.
