Cabinets and workbenches

Per cubic foot, cabinets are the most expensive storage in a garage. A representative 36 inch cabinet publishes 600 lb total; a representative 77 inch welded shelving unit publishes 10,000 lb, for less money and in a footprint that stores far more.

People buy cabinets anyway, and they are right to — just not for capacity. Doors buy three things, and all three are real.

What doors actually buy

• Security. Paint, solvents, fuel, pesticides, and sharp or powered tools in a garage children use. This is the strongest case and it is a safety requirement rather than a preference.
• Dust. A garage where you cut, sand or grind puts fine dust on every open surface. Anything with a fine mechanism benefits from a door.
• The visual mess you cannot solve. Some categories never look tidy on an open shelf. A door is a legitimate answer to that.

The published numbers, and a counterintuitive one

Seville Classics publishes 600 lb total and 150 lb per shelf for the 36 x 18 x 72 in UltraHD, and 800 lb total with 100 lb per shelf for the 60 x 24 x 72 in extra-wide.

Read those twice. The narrower cabinet has the higher per-shelf rating. Shelf span is why: a 36 inch shelf has less distance to bridge than a 60 inch one, so width and per-shelf capacity pull in opposite directions.

The extra-wide also publishes a reinforced 200 lb bottom shelf against 100 lb elsewhere — which is the manufacturer acknowledging that heavy things end up at the bottom regardless of what the manual says.

How many cabinets you actually need

Usually one. Make a list of the things in your garage that genuinely need to be locked or dust-free — for most people it fits in a single 36 inch cabinet with room left over.

Workbenches: the honest question first

Most garage workbenches are storage with a lid on, and that is worth knowing before you spend bench money on one. A real bench earns its floor by being a surface you clamp to, cut on and assemble at.

If nothing will ever be clamped or cut on yours, a run of cabinets with a countertop costs less and holds more. Steel cabinets in an unheated garage

They sweat. Warm damp air meets cold steel and condenses, and a closed cabinet does not dry quickly. That is an argument about what you put in them rather than against buying them: leave a gap behind the unit for airflow, do not seal the doors, and keep genuinely moisture-sensitive items in a sealed bin inside rather than loose on a shelf.
