Shelving

The best shelving for a storage unit

Buy the SafeRacks 24 x 92 x 84 boltless steel rack if the unit is a 10x10 or bigger and you have a hand truck. Buy the Sterilite 5 Shelf Unit if you are carrying everything in by hand. Neither one touches the building, which is the part your rental agreement actually cares about.

Scores are our editorial assessment against the criteria on how we pick. They are not test results and are not marked up as review ratings.

If the unit is a 10x10 or larger and you can get a hand truck to the door, the SafeRacks 24 x 92 x 84 boltless rack is the one to buy: 2,000 lb across four adjustable tiers, and it knocks down flat when the unit does. If you are carrying everything in by hand and down a corridor, buy the Sterilite 5 Shelf Unit instead — 150 lb a shelf, tool-free, light enough to reposition alone.

A storage unit is a strange shelving problem, and it is not the one the category is designed around. You are renting a volume you are not allowed to alter, you will take everything out again, and the facility is charging you for eight feet of height while almost everyone stacks to four.

That last number is not a guess. Public Storage publishes its own size chart, and every standard unit on it works out at exactly eight feet of ceiling — a 10x10 is 100 square feet and 800 cubic feet, a 5x10 is 50 square feet and 400 cubic feet. Shelving is the only way to buy the top half of that back.

We have not tested these units. This is published specifications read against the constraints a rented unit imposes — the method is on how we pick, and the rest of the category is in the shelving hub.

How we picked

  • Nothing fixes to the building. Every pick here stands on the floor. Anything that wants a stud, a joist or an anchor is ruled out before capacity is even discussed.
  • It has to come apart again. You will move out. A welded rack that went in through a roll-up door does not necessarily come out through a corridor and a lift.
  • Height reaches toward eight feet. A four-foot unit in an eight-foot space wastes half of what you are paying for.
  • Depth takes a standard tote. 27-gallon totes are about 19.6 in wide, so an 18 in shelf leaves them overhanging and a 24 in shelf does not.
  • A published capacity. Where a maker publishes a total but no per-shelf figure, the pick says so.
  • Honest cons on every pick.

Ask the facility before you buy anything

This is the first move, not the last one. A self-storage agreement rents you a space rather than selling you the right to improve it, and whether you may attach anything to the walls, the ceiling or the partition panels is a question for your specific facility. Rules differ by operator and by building — a drive-up unit with block walls is a different structure from an interior unit divided by corrugated steel partitions, and the second one often will not hold a fixing at all.

The practical answer is to assume you are not fixing anything and buy accordingly. That is not much of a loss: it rules out the wall shelves, the overhead racks and the panel systems, which is three of the six categories on this site, and everything in the remaining three stands on the floor anyway.

What the no-fixings rule rules out

Out: wall-mounted shelves, slatwall and pegboard panels, track systems, ceiling racks, bike hoists, anything with a wall anchor in the box. The wall-mounted against freestanding comparison explains what you give up.

In: freestanding steel, freestanding resin, wire shelving, rolling units, and stacked totes. That is the whole menu, and it is enough.

The eight-foot ceiling is the whole opportunity

Public Storage's published comparison chart is the clearest source on this, because it gives both the floor area and the volume for every size it rents. Divide the second by the first and the ceiling height falls out.

10 ft x 10 ft1008008 ft
10 ft x 15 ft1501,2008 ft
10 ft x 20 ft2001,6008 ft
Square feet and cubic feet as published on the Public Storage size guide, read 2026-10-18. The ceiling figure is arithmetic from those two columns, not a separate published number, and Public Storage states that sizes are approximate and may vary by facility. Measure your own unit.

Two things follow. First, a locker is not a shelving problem — at an implied four feet of height, the only thing that fits is the short four-tier plastic unit or stacked totes, and often just the totes.

Second, in everything else, a 72 to 84 in rack is the right height and most people buy shorter. An 84 in rack in an eight-foot unit leaves a foot of clearance at the top, which is about right: you want to be able to get the top shelf loaded without the boxes scraping the ceiling.

Read the last row against the first. The Husky welded rack is the strongest freestanding shelving we recommend anywhere on this site, by a factor of five on the per-shelf figure. It is also the one unit here you should not put in a rented unit, because welded construction means it goes in as one 77-inch object and comes out the same way. In a drive-up unit with a hand truck, fine. Through an interior corridor, a lift and two right-angle turns, it is a problem you discover on the last day of the lease.

Boltless steel or tool-free resin

Steel: more capacity, more unit to move

The SafeRacks rack is the pick because of what SafeRacks says about its assembly rather than its capacity: “fast and easy assembly process” and adjustable shelf heights, with a limited lifetime warranty behind it. Boltless steel goes together without a drill and comes apart the same way, and the adjustable tiers matter more in a storage unit than in a garage — you are fitting shelf heights around boxes you already own rather than around a wall you can re-plan.

The honest limitation is that SafeRacks publishes 2,000 lb for the whole unit and no per-shelf figure on its own product page. Four tiers and 2,000 lb divides to 500 lb a tier, and that is the arithmetic rather than a number SafeRacks stands behind. Plan against the total.

The other limitation is width. 92 inches is more than seven and a half feet, which fits a 10-foot wall with room for a corner but will not fit a 5x5 at all. SafeRacks sells 48 in and 72 in versions of the same rack, and in a small unit those are the right ones.

Resin: lighter, cannot rust, no tools at all

The Sterilite 5 Shelf Unit publishes 150 lb per shelf and 750 lb across five shelves, which is the highest per-shelf figure in the plastic category and competitive with entry-level steel. In a storage unit it wins on three practical counts: it assembles with no tools, it is light enough for one person to carry in and reposition, and it cannot surface-rust in an unheated building.

What you give up is adjustability. The shelves are fixed with 15.77 in of clearance between them, so a tall item either fits that gap or lives on top of the unit. Measure your tallest box before buying.

Why wire shelving is the quiet right answer in a sealed unit

An interior storage unit has no window, no airflow and a concrete slab underneath. That is a combination that keeps whatever humidity arrives with your boxes right where it is.

Wire shelving is the one deck that does not make that worse. The Seville Classics UltraDurable units publish 800 lb per shelf on leveling feet and 4,000 lb across the unit, NSF certified, and the open deck means air moves around a damp box instead of trapping it against a solid shelf.

The trade is that small things fall through and wire marks soft finishes. For a unit full of totes and boxes, neither matters. For a unit full of loose objects, line the shelves or buy solid — which defeats the airflow you came for.

Get everything off the slab

This is the single highest-value thing shelving does in a storage unit, and it has nothing to do with capacity.

A concrete slab is a moisture path. Boxes sitting directly on one wick whatever the floor has, and in a unit you visit twice a year nobody notices until the bottom carton collapses. Any shelf, at any rating, puts the bottom layer a few inches up and in moving air.

If you are storing cardboard, this matters more than anything else on this page — and if the contents are worth more than the boxes, the honest answer is to switch to totes. The sizes are in storage bin sizes and the case against cardboard is in totes against cardboard.

Lay it out as an aisle, not as a room

  1. Shelving down the long walls, aisle up the middle. A 10x10 with 24 in racks on two opposite walls leaves a five-foot aisle, which is enough to walk in with a box in both hands.
  2. Nothing deep at the back. The back wall is where things go to be forgotten. Keep the back of the unit for the single tall or awkward item and shelve the sides.
  3. Heaviest on the bottom tier, always. Both for the rating and because a loaded rack in a building you do not own is not something you want to find out about.
  4. Label the end that faces the aisle. You are reading these boxes from one direction only, which is different from a garage. The system is in labeling a bin system.
  5. Leave the top shelf for light bulk. Eight-foot ceilings mean the top tier is above shoulder height, and getting a 40 lb box down from there alone is how people hurt themselves.

What we could not verify

  • Door opening widths and heights. No major operator publishes them in its size guide. This is the dimension most likely to stop a 92 in rack getting into a unit, and the only way to know it is to measure the door of the unit you are renting.
  • Whether your facility permits fixings. Operators do not publish a uniform rule and we are not going to invent one. Ask.
  • SafeRacks per-shelf capacity. The product page publishes a 2,000 lb total and no per-tier figure.
  • Seville Classics per-configuration dimensions. The UltraDurable line is sold in several widths and depths and the capacity figure we cite is the published per-shelf rating on leveling feet, not a size-specific one.
  • Ceiling heights at any specific facility. The eight-foot figure in the table is arithmetic from Public Storage's own published square and cubic footage, and Public Storage says sizes vary by facility.

Who should buy which

Buy the SafeRacks 24 x 92 x 84 if the unit is a 10x10 or bigger, you can get a hand truck to the door, and the contents are heavy — tools, parts, books, files. 2,000 lb across four adjustable tiers, and it leaves flat when you do.

Buy the Sterilite 5 Shelf Unit if you are carrying everything in by hand, the building is unheated, or you want the whole thing up in twenty minutes with no tools. 150 lb a shelf is more than most unit contents need.

Buy Seville Classics wire if the unit is interior with no airflow and the contents include anything you would rather not find musty. 800 lb per shelf and a deck that lets air through.

Buy the Plano 4-Shelf if the unit is a 5x5 or a reduced-height locker. 47.5 in tall and 14 in deep is the only shape that works in those, and 50 lb a shelf is what you get for it.

Do not buy the Husky welded rack for this even though it is the strongest freestanding shelving we recommend. It arrives welded and it leaves welded, and a rented unit is the one place that matters.

What works

  • Knocks down to flat parts, so it goes down a basement stair and into a storage unit a welded rack will not
  • Shelf heights adjust, which fixed-tier plastic shelving cannot do
  • Limited lifetime warranty, published, which is rare below the commercial tier
  • 24 in deep takes a 27-gallon tote across the shelf
  • 92 in of run in one unit, so a long wall is covered in a single purchase

What doesn't

  • SafeRacks publishes a 2,000 lb total but no per-shelf figure on its own product page, so you are planning against a whole-unit number
  • 92 in wide is more than seven and a half feet of wall and will not fit a short run
  • Bare steel in a damp basement or an unheated unit will eventually surface-rust at the cut edges
  • Boltless means it can be racked out of square if the floor is uneven, and storage-unit floors often are

Skip this one if the wall is shorter than eight feet. There are 48 in and 72 in versions of the same rack, and buying 92 inches for a 60 inch wall is a problem you cannot assemble your way out of.

What works

  • Will not rust, dent or peel, which is the whole argument for plastic in a damp garage
  • Tool-free assembly and light enough to move alone
  • 18 in depth takes a 27-gallon tote across the shelf

What doesn't

  • Shelves are fixed, so tall items have to fit the 15.77 in gap or go on top
  • 750 lb total is a fraction of what a welded steel rack of the same footprint publishes
  • Plastic flexes visibly under a heavy, concentrated load even within the rating
  • Ventilated shelves let small parts and dust fall through to the shelf below

Skip this one if you are storing engine parts, paint by the case or anything else that concentrates weight. Steel publishes several times this per shelf for similar money.

  • You can see into the back of the shelf, which is where garage items go to be forgotten

What doesn't

  • Small items fall through the wire unless you sit them on a tray or in a bin
  • The 800 lb figure is for the leveling-feet configuration; casters change the number
  • Wire decks mark and scratch anything with a soft finish

Questions people actually ask

Can you put your own shelves in a storage unit?

Freestanding shelves, almost always — they stand on the floor and alter nothing. Shelves that fix to a wall, a ceiling or a partition panel are a question for your specific facility, because operators and building types differ and interior units are often divided by corrugated steel that will not hold a fixing. Assume no fixings and buy freestanding.

How tall can shelving be in a storage unit?

Public Storage's published size chart works out at eight feet of ceiling for every standard unit — a 10x10 is 100 square feet and 800 cubic feet. A 72 to 84 in rack fits that with loading clearance at the top. Reduced-height lockers are a different case: at 25 square feet and 100 cubic feet, the implied ceiling is about four feet.

What is the best shelving for a 5x5 storage unit?

Something shallow and short. A 14 in deep, 47.5 in tall four-shelf unit fits against one wall and still leaves room to stand in a 5x5; a 24 in deep rack does not. Expect a low per-shelf rating in that size — around 50 lb — and plan on totes for the rest.

Should storage unit shelving be steel or plastic?

Steel if the contents are heavy and you can move the unit on a hand truck. Plastic if you are carrying it in by hand or the building is unheated and damp — resin cannot rust, assembles without tools, and the best of it publishes 150 lb a shelf, which covers most unit contents.

Will a welded shelving rack fit in a storage unit?

It may go in and still not come out. A welded rack is one rigid object the full width of the unit, so a drive-up door is usually fine and an interior corridor with a lift and two turns often is not. Boltless and tool-free units knock down flat, which is why they are the picks here.
