The best resin garage cabinets

A resin cabinet is the answer to a question steel cannot answer well: what do you put in a garage that is damp, unheated, or occasionally wet across the floor? Steel in that garage sweats in a humidity swing and eventually shows rust at the seams. Resin does not.

What resin gives up is capacity. Suncast publishes 75 lb per shelf across its cabinet line. Seville Classics publishes 150 lb per shelf for a steel cabinet of a similar size. Neither figure is wrong, and which one matters depends entirely on what is going inside.

We have not tested these cabinets. This is a reading of the manufacturers' published figures — the method is on how we pick, and the full category sits in the cabinets hub.

How we picked

• A published per-shelf rating. Every cabinet here states what one shelf takes, not just a headline total.
• Cubic feet, published. Enclosed storage is sold by volume and resin manufacturers actually publish it, which makes honest comparison possible.
• Interior depth against a tote. The recurring garage cabinet trap: doors that will not close on a 19.6 in bin.
• A stated warranty. Suncast publishes five years. Some of the category publishes nothing.
• Honest cons on every pick, including the steel cabinet we include as the comparison.

The published figures

Two things stand out. First, Suncast's shelf rating does not change with cabinet size — the 31 cu ft mega cabinet has the same 75 lb shelves as the 9 cu ft base unit. You are buying volume, not strength.

Second, the Sterilite cabinet at 40 lb a shelf is in a different class from everything else here. It is the cheapest way to get a lockable door in a garage, and it is not storage for anything heavy.

The interior depth problem, again

Suncast publishes both exterior and interior dimensions, which is more honest than most of the category. The interior depth across the whole line is 17.25 in.

Resin against steel, honestly

The security row deserves a second look. Both are "lockable" and neither is secure. A padlock on a resin door keeps children and casual hands out of the weed killer, which is the actual job. Nothing in this category is a safe, and any page that implies otherwise is selling you something.

The damp garage case, in detail

Suncast describes its panels as multi-wall resin that resists dents, rust and rotting. The practical reading:

• No rust means no rust streaks down whatever the cabinet stands on, which is the first thing you notice with steel in a wet garage.
• Resin does not pull heat out of the air the way steel does, so condensation forms less readily on the panel. It still forms on cold contents.
• A resin cabinet can be hosed out. If the garage floods, that matters.

The one thing resin does not solve: a closed cabinet in a damp garage is still a closed box with humid air in it. Leave a gap behind the unit, and do not store paper, cardboard or fabric at floor level in a garage that gets wet.

What actually belongs in a resin cabinet

75 lb a shelf sounds modest until you convert it into the things people actually lock away:

The pattern: a resin shelf runs out of rating on liquids and runs out of space on everything else. Paint is the one category that gets close to the limit quickly, and it is also the category most likely to be behind a locked door in the first place.

The one thing we would not store in resin is anything dense and dropped from height — a box of fasteners, an engine part, a bench vise. Not because the shelf cannot hold the static weight, but because a plastic shelf takes a point impact differently from a steel one.

Sizing: how many cabinets you actually need

Make the list before you buy. In most garages, the things that genuinely need a door are: garden chemicals, solvents and fuels, spray paint, sharp hand tools, and anything battery powered that should not freeze or bake.

That list fits in one 19 cu ft tall cabinet with room over, which is why the BMC7200 is the pick. Buy the mega cabinet if long-handled tools are going in standing up — its interior height is 77.5 in — and buy the base cabinet in pairs if you want a worktop over two of them.

A wall of cabinets costs several times what the same capacity costs in open shelving, and that arithmetic is worked through in cabinets against shelves.

Placement notes that matter for resin

1. Level it before loading. Resin cabinets flex. On a sloped garage slab an unlevel cabinet racks slightly, and the doors then stop meeting in the middle.
2. Keep the heavy things on the bottom shelf. 75 lb is per shelf, and a tall cabinet loaded high is a tipping risk with no published anti-tip hardware.
3. Check the ceiling before buying the mega. 80.25 in tall clears most garages, but not under a low door track or a rafter-hung shelf.
4. Do not use the top as a work surface. None of these publishes a top load rating.

What we could not verify

• Top load ratings. Not published for any cabinet here.
• Sterilite's volume and warranty. Neither is published on the product page we read.
• Temperature limits. No manufacturer publishes how the shelf rating changes in summer heat or hard frost.
• Whether wall anchoring is supported. None of these publishes an anti-tip anchor or a tip rating.

Who should buy which

Buy the Suncast BMC7200 if you want one resin cabinet. 19 cu ft, 75 lb shelves, pad-lockable, five year warranty.

Buy the BMC8000 mega if the leaf blower, the strimmer and the long-handled tools are going in standing up, and you have the ceiling for 80 inches.

Buy the BMC3600 base in pairs if you want bench height. Two of them with a board across is the cheapest worktop-with-storage in the category.

Buy the Sterilite cabinet if the budget is tight and the job is a locked chemical cupboard. 40 lb a shelf, and no pretending otherwise.

Buy the Seville steel cabinet instead if the garage is dry and the contents are heavy. Double the per-shelf rating, and six fewer inches of depth eaten from the walkway.
