The best small parts organizers for a garage

Almost every garage has the same object in it: a coffee can, an ice cream tub or a takeaway container holding several hundred mixed fasteners, at least one of which is the one you need. Solving that is the cheapest meaningful upgrade available to a garage, and it is mostly a question of picking the right drawer size.

The mistake is buying on drawer count. A 64-drawer cabinet sounds like more storage than a 24-drawer one, and for wood screws it is — but its drawers are 2-7/32 inches wide inside, and most garage hardware is not. How we ranked these

Four criteria, in the order they actually decide a purchase:

1. Does the drawer fit your parts? The only question that cannot be worked around later. Published inside dimensions, measured against the largest thing you intend to store.
2. Sorting density per inch of wall. Garage wall is finite. Compartments per square foot of wall is the honest measure of how much sorting a product buys you.
3. Can you find things without opening drawers? Clear fronts or open bins beat opaque ones. A system you have to search is a system you will stop using.
4. What is published. Load ratings, dimensions, mounting methods. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, we say so rather than filling the gap.

The four, side by side

1. Akro-Mils 10164 — best for sorted hardware

Sixty-four clear drawers in a cabinet 20 inches wide and 6-3/8 inches deep. Nothing else in this comparison gets close on compartments per inch of wall, and Akro-Mils states that the cabinets stack securely and wall mount on keyhole slots — so it costs no bench space at all.

The drawers are 6 x 2-7/32 x 1-9/16 inches inside. Read that before buying, because it is the whole story: wood screws, machine screws, washers, nuts, wall anchors, cotter pins and electrical terminals all fit comfortably. A 3 inch hex bolt does not lie flat, and a socket does not go in at all.

Honest cons. Akro-Mils publishes no load rating for the cabinet or its drawers, so a wall mount is being planned without a number. The plastic drawer rails are the wear point — a heavily loaded drawer pulled all the way out is how they break. And 64 categories is more categories than many people will genuinely maintain.

Skip it if your small parts are not actually small. This is a fastener cabinet, and filling it with half-used drawers of things that barely fit is worse than not having it.

2. Akro-Mils 10124 — best for mixed hardware sizes

The same 20 x 6-3/8 x 15-13/16 inch cabinet with 24 larger drawers instead of 64 small ones. Inside dimensions are 6 x 4-9/16 x 2-3/16 inches — roughly twice the width and nearly a half-inch more height than the 64-drawer.

For most garages this is the more useful of the two, because most garage hardware is bigger than a wood screw: hose fittings, couplers, hinges, casters, picture hooks, sanding discs, spare blades. And because the outside footprint is identical, the honest answer for a lot of people is one of each, stacked — fasteners in the 64, everything else in the 24.

Honest cons. 24 drawers means broader categories, so you are still sorting by hand inside a drawer. No published load rating, same as the 10164. And the same plastic rails now carry more weight per drawer.

Skip it if you genuinely have hundreds of distinct fastener sizes — at that point the 64-drawer is right and this one just recreates the coffee can in 24 larger pieces.

3. Akro-Mils 30118 louvered panel — best wall system

A different shape of answer. The 30118 is an 18 inch wide by 61 inch tall steel louvered panel that hanging bins clip onto, and Akro-Mils publishes a 500 lb load capacity for it. That is a real, checkable number on a wall product, and almost nothing else in small-parts storage prints one.

The reason to choose it over a drawer cabinet is growth. Bin sizes are yours to pick and to change, so the system follows the parts instead of the parts being forced into a factory-set drawer. The 61 inch vertical format also uses the dead strip of wall beside a door or between two studs, which a 20 inch wide cabinet cannot.

Honest cons. Bins are sold separately, so the panel alone does nothing and the real price is panel plus a bin set — this is the most expensive route here to a finished system. The 500 lb figure is the panel's rating and assumes it is properly fastened; your wall and fasteners are the actual limit, which is the same argument made in how much weight a garage wall can hold. And louvered panels take Akro-Mils style hanging bins, not the round-hole pegboard hooks you may already own.

Skip it if you want one purchase that arrives finished.

4. DeWalt DWST14825 Deep PRO Organizer — best portable

Ten removable cups in a case with an IP53 water seal and anti-rust metal latches, and DeWalt states that multiple organizers clip together via the side latches. The seal and the latches are what you are paying for: they are the two things that fail first on a cheap parts case.

The removable cups matter more than they sound. You lift six fittings out and carry them to the job rather than taking the whole case, which is the actual daily behavior this product supports.

Honest cons. DeWalt does not publish overall dimensions on its own product page, so you cannot plan shelf space from the spec sheet — we are not going to substitute a retailer's approximate figure for a published one. Ten compartments is far coarser sorting than any of the drawer cabinets. And it is priced as a jobsite tool rather than as garage storage.

Skip it if the parts never leave the garage. The seal is money spent on portability you will not use, and the same money buys two wall-mounted drawer cabinets with four times the sorting.

What none of these publish

Worth stating together, because it is a real gap across the whole category and it changes how you should install them.

• Akro-Mils publishes no load rating for the drawer cabinets. Neither the 10164 nor the 10124 states a per-drawer or per-cabinet figure. They do state that the cabinets wall mount on keyhole slots — so you are being told it mounts, without being told how much it can hold while mounted. Fasten into a stud and keep the heaviest drawers at the bottom.
• DeWalt publishes no overall dimensions for the DWST14825 on its own product page. Retailers list an approximate size; we are not going to promote that to a specification.
• Nobody publishes a drawer load. Across all four products, the weight a single loaded drawer or bin can take is unstated. In practice the plastic rails are the limit and a fully extended loaded drawer is the failure mode.

The 30118 panel is the exception that shows what disclosure looks like: a published 500 lb load capacity on the panel. That is why it scores highest of the four on published data despite being the least complete product out of the box.

Setting one up so it survives

Buying is the easy half. Three things decide whether the system is still working in a year.

1. Sort by task, not by taxonomy. "Drywall" and "electrical" are better drawer labels than "M4 machine screws", because you go to the garage with a job in mind rather than a fastener size.
2. Mount it at eye level over the bench. A drawer cabinet on the floor gets ignored. The whole value is reading sixty-four labels at a glance, which only works at the height you stand.
3. Leave drawers empty on purpose. A full cabinet has nowhere to put the next category, and the next category ends up back in a can. Finishing with a quarter of the drawers empty is a feature.

Choosing between them
