Where the garden hose goes

A garden hose is the one garage item that is heavy, wet, and shaped wrong for every kind of storage. Left in a coil on the floor it kinks, it holds water, and it drags grit into the garage. On a nail it stretches and cracks at the bend.

The category splits into three, and the right one depends on a single number: the length of hose you own. Everything else follows.

We have not tested these. The figures are Suncast's own published specifications, read on the verification date — the method is on how we pick, and the rest of the garage is in the mess.

The three answers, and their published capacities

Note the pattern that surprises people: the plain hanger holds more hose than the compact reel — 150 ft against 100 ft — and takes up less than half the depth on the wall. What you give up is the winding.

Which one you need

Under 100 ft, used often: the compact reel

The Sidewinder holds 100 ft of standard 5/8 in hose, arrives assembled and sticks out 11.5 in from the wall. For the common case — a 50 or 75 ft hose, used for the car and the beds — this is the one. Winding is manual, but with 50 ft on the drum that is a few seconds.

Over 100 ft: the bigger reel, with the guide

The Slide Trak takes 175 ft and adds a guide that lays the hose evenly across the drum instead of piling it against one side. That guide is the actual feature. A hose wound in a lump is a hose that jams halfway out and gets yanked, and yanking is what pulls reels off walls.

The cost is size: over 20 in deep and 22 in wide, which is a real object on a garage wall.

Any length, used rarely: the hanger

A hanger is a hook with a lid: 150 ft capacity, 6 in deep, nothing to wind or jam, and a compartment for the nozzle so it stops living on the floor. If the hose comes out twice a month, this is the sensible purchase, and it is the cheapest of the three.

The catch is honest and it is the reason it is not our top pick: you coil 150 ft of hose by hand, every time. Hand-coiled hose kinks more, and the job you resent is the job that stops getting done.

What a full hose actually weighs

This is the part nobody checks before drilling. Water weighs about 8.3 lb per gallon, and a 5/8 in hose holds roughly 1 gallon per 50 ft when full.

The point of that table: a long hose left full on a reel is a real load on a few screws, applied at a lever arm of 20 inches from the wall. Suncast does not publish a weight rating for these mounts, which is the main gap in the category.

Inside the garage or outside on the wall?

Both work, and the trade is genuine.

• Outside puts the hose next to the tap, keeps the wet thing out of the garage, and exposes a resin housing to years of UV. Suncast describes these as resin built for outdoor use, but does not publish a UV rating.
• Inside protects the reel and the hose from frost and sun, and means dragging a wet hose past whatever you park. If the hose comes in, it wants to be on the wall nearest the door, not deep in the garage.

In a cold climate, inside wins for the months that matter — a hose that freezes solid is a hose you replace. The yard tools that live in the same corner are covered in where the yard tools go.

The hook option, and when it is enough

If a wall rail is already up, a wide utility hook holds a coiled hose for the price of the hook. It is not as tidy as a reel and the coil has to be done by hand, but for a 50 ft hose used a few times a summer it is genuinely sufficient.

Use a wide hook rather than a narrow one: a tight radius creases the hose at the same point every time, and that crease becomes the split. Hook ratings are in the garage hooks guide, and the rail systems that carry them are in the best garage wall storage systems.

What we could not verify

• Weight ratings for any of these mounts. Suncast publishes hose capacity in feet but no load figure for the bracket, which is the number a wall fixing actually needs.
• Whether mounting hardware is included. The product pages we read do not state it.
• Warranty. None of the three product pages we read publishes a warranty term.
• UV and freeze limits. Not published, so we are not claiming an outdoor lifespan.
• Hose weights. The table above is arithmetic and typical figures, not manufacturer data — hose weight varies enormously between vinyl and rubber.

What to actually do

50 to 100 ft of hose, used weekly: the Sidewinder reel, on the wall by the tap or just inside the door.

More than 100 ft: the Slide Trak, for the capacity and especially for the guide.

Occasional use, or a tight walkway: the Hangout hanger. Six inches deep, 150 ft capacity, nothing to break.

A rail already on the wall: a wide hook, and spend the money elsewhere.
